Inspiring Wooden Partitions Employed in the Design of Japanese Pojagi House Posted: 15 Jun 2012 06:48 AM PDT Kiyotoshi Mori & Natsuko Kawamura of architecture studio MDS completed the design for Pojagi House, a modern Japanese residence located in a residential district of Yokohama-city. The exterior of the residence is defined by generous windows, partially opening the house towards the street. This composition is complemented by parallel cladding surfaced with cedar boards, creating an overall interesting visual effect. The entire living volume is supported by a concrete base foundations, dissolving the need of a “fence”. Here are more details from the official project description: “The interior of traditional Japanese homes feature a space with floors surfaced with straw Tatami mats, referred to as the Tsuzukima, or ‘continuous gap’. Sliding screens within the wide open area may be drawn to subdivide into smaller rooms. This concept has been reinterpreted and expanded within this dwelling, incorporating a Korean Pojagi patchwork cloth designed by the owner. Moveable panels of fabric are hung between a loose spatial arrangement of partitions comprised of a colonnade of wooden pillars. The square columns measure 150 mm, stacked against each other to form wing walls“. Three-Dimensional Financial Paper Architecture by Jill Sylvia Posted: 15 Jun 2012 04:41 AM PDT Patience and concentration go hand in hand when working on a project as detailed as this one. The Three-Dimensional Paper Architecture splendidly created by American artist Jill Sylvia is one of those projects that remains in your memory and you want to share it with others. Made out of paper cut-outs, these striking structures depict imposing buildings like the New York Stock Exchange, the U.S. Capitol Building, the Jefferson Memorial, the White House, or the U.S. Treasury Building. By cutting out blank spaces in ledger book or balance sheets, Jill Sylvia fabricates paper architecture that conveys analysis sheets into fine detailed structures: “The skeletal pages drape and accumulate, demarcate the time cost for their creation, and become the buildings for which they have laid the groundwork.” By re-contextualizing architectural buildings and official printed works, the talented artist creates stunning paper representations of well-known buildings and manages to perfect her art with each new project. Also known as the first 5 star All-Inclusive Platinum Plan Resort in the Maldives, the retreat combines a favorable location with excellent facilities and services.The accommodation units are described as follows: “The primary objective has been to upgrade the resort to a high quality, luxury experience. Only natural materials are used for all its villas as well as public areas. The final product is a fusion of contemporary design and local Maldivian architecture. It is a wonderful combination of wood, different kinds of natural stones and modern design, which blend in creatively with the natural surroundings of the island“. Probably the most relaxing feature of the hotel, the Spa, is considered here “a sanctuary for the inner self” and consists of over-water pavilions with glass floor, combined with natural materials and exotic fragrances. Embryocare Clinic Displaying New Direction In Healthcare Design Posted: 15 Jun 2012 02:15 AM PDT Re-created to shape a new direction in healthcare design, this gynecological clinic displays an interesting collection of modern lines, dotted by textured surfaces and colored mostly in white, with furniture pieces showcasing a comforting summer-sky blue. Embryocare occupies a 200 square meters apartment in downtown Athens, near other spaces bearing similar programs.  Fabricated by the creative minds of Athens-based architectural studio Mab Architects, this pristine white look suits the clinic, conveying the feeling of cleanliness, while the sculptural reception and waiting room sofas break the monotony with their relaxing cool blue. The Embryocare clinic was designed after taking down all installations and creating partitions for each necessary space. Here is how the architects describe the project: “The choice of materials with cellular structures is a reference to the nature of the work performed in this surgery. Partitions and wall claddings are made of special translucent sandwich panels, made of two sheets of Perspex and the in-between gap, which is filled with plastic straws of different diameters. The material provides extraordinary effects and changes translucency depending on the viewpoint. White round mosaic tiling is covering all floors and occasionally the same surface splashes also over walls. Glossy white plaster ceiling is randomly pierced by seemingly floating circles of light or circular air vents.
