Interior designer Remmelt van der Wal recently opened his new Remmelt interior design studio in Amsterdam: a unique location in an impressive monumental building next to the Rijksmuseum, on the corner with PC Hooftstraat. Remmelt's style is minimalist, cosmopolitan and industrial. The interior designer worked hard to convert the building into an exclusive design studio. Covering an area of over 200m², the studio is a showcase for innovative made-to-measure solutions for all kinds of interior space. Unique details are lovingly incorporated, exuding luxury.

Remmelt van der Wal: "I listen to the client, we discuss the project together in great detail and look for solutions that will inspire the client. Every individual element of an interior design has its own function, and needs to work with the mood of the overall concept.  My designs are not restricted by standard measurements. This gives me the freedom to create an overall interior design that fits seamlessly into the client's individual lifestyle." The Solid Surface HI-MACS® material was also used to create the interior fittings. Kitchen worktops, bookshelves, cupboards, bathroom walls and floors and a table were made from this robust and impervious acrylic stone. The interior designer opted for the shade Alpine White: "I chose this particular material for its uniform quality and characteristics, which make it resistant to external effects. It stays looking brand new. I love this shade of white – there are no other colours in it, making it perfect for a wide range of applications."

Lotus House 1 Verticality In Modern Residential Architecture Displayed By Lotus House

Catching the attention of passers-by with its imposing white architecture, the Lotus House rises two stories in the air, just enough to create a stunning first impression. Its two stories were designed to wrap around a pond with a natural spring and combine modern architecture and a comfortable lifestyle. Located in Country Heights, Kajang, Malaysia, this residence is made of the main living volume spreading over two floors and an additional guest pavilion connected to the main building via an elongated covered walkway. Operating with as much natural light as possible, the architects of 29 Design imagined this residence embracing its ascension to the sky by displaying a set of very organized, carefully placed vertical lines. Seen on the front facade, sides and defining the connection between interiors and exterior on the garden side, these vertical windows filter natural light for the living spaces and acts as beacons during nighttime. No wonder the interiors are so bright!

Contemporary Home With Dramatic Views of the San Francisco Skyline

Bernal Heights Residence 01 Contemporary Home With Dramatic Views of the San Francisco Skyline

Located in a dense neighborhood in San Francisco, this modern home designed by studio SB Architects takes advantage of a unique area in Bernal Heights, where privacy is not just a beautiful dream. The architects explain: “The goal for this project was to seize the unique zoning opportunity to build a new home on this desirable, but never-developed, corner site in a dense San Francisco neighborhood. The basic envelope was shaped in large part by the neighborhood planning code, which dictated elements such as bay windows, notched side yards and inset entries to create movement and shadow along the street-scape. While the design is rooted in the local vernacular and code within this traditional San Francisco neighborhood, the interpretation is distinctly clean and modern“. The project seems to unfold from a central staircase, wrapped by private areas and complemented by dramatic skylight views of San Francisco. Private spaces are located on the bottom floor, while public areas take advantage of the position of the upper level, where natural light reigns throughout.

Levitating Elephant Installation Balancing On Its Trunk

Nasutamanus by Daniel Firman 1 Levitating Elephant Installation Balancing On Its Trunk

Fiberglass and polymer meet in a unique sculpture depicting a life-size elephant balancing on its trunk. Interestingly floating above the ground, this creatively charged exhibit piece was imagined by contemporary French artist Daniel Firman. Part of the exhibition entitled “The Circus as a Parallel Universe” that can be seen between 4 May and 2 September 2012 at Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna, this installation named Nasutamanus follows the first balancing elephant exhibited in France back in 2008 and named Wursa. Collaborating with a taxidermist ensured that this piece would be life-like enough to have a powerful visual impact. Being connected to the wall with its trunk, the floating elephant sculpture displays what an elephant can do at 18 000 Km from earth gravity. Measuring 7.2 feet x 17.3 feet x 44 inches, Nasutamanus shows the extraordinary power of nature captured in one of its beings.
