Modern Rehabilitation Project in Portugal: House in Estoril Posted: 17 Apr 2012 06:14 AM PDT House in Estoril, Portugal was developed by Frederico Valsassina Architects in the shape of an imposing modern residence, with large windows, capturing its surroundings. The house is a result of the rehabilitation project: “Through simplicity, and taking as a premise the redevelopment and rehabilitation of an existing house, the intervention tries to overcome the irregularity of its original form. Thus, massive volumes that are subtracted from each other promote a monolithic image, on which the controlled choice of materials intended to enhance the shape as whole. Inside, the adaptation of existing spaces for the new housing program aims to reveal a clear fusion of the social realm, more exposed, and the service area, which appears in the continuity of this zone to a more protected area in the backyard“. A dematerialized stairway connects the two levels of the residence, allowing quick access to the bedrooms flooded by natural light on the second floor. Volumes of Different Heights Combined to Implement Mario Rocha House in Portugal Posted: 17 Apr 2012 03:29 AM PDT Carlos Nuno Lacerda envisioned and implemented the Mario Rocha house in Valongo, Portugal, a contemporary residence composed of various volumes with different heights. The project is partially enclosed on the side facing the street and opens up towards the inner courtyard. Here are further details from the architects: ” The program was conceived according to functional requirements, and adjusted to the needs of the project, ensuring through the study of light, natural ventilation and circulation, a succession of different and adapted spaces with different uses. Thus, the compartments were designed with height differences, gaps and openings of light, resulting in a multitude of volumes that relate differently. On the other hand, there was a particular concern about the limits' dilution between interior/exterior in the room, kitchen and gym/spa. This was seen as an extension to the outside through large glazed surfaces, taking the maximum advantage of the site and simultaneously ensuring adequate privacy, achieved through the design of landscape architecture“. Handmade Yachiyo Metal Rug Designed to Last for Generations Posted: 17 Apr 2012 02:22 AM PDT The creative team at Philippe Malouin came up with an original approach to rug designing. The studio envisioned a project that would last for generations, that is “virtually indestructible”, due to the metal used to create it and the intricate elaboration process. According to the official description, the Yachiyo metal rug required more than 3000 meters of galvanized wire and 3000 hours of work to achieve it. If you are interested in the production process itself, here is a short, but relevant description: “The metal rug is completely handmade from galvanized steel wire, the same type of wire that is used to make animal pen fencing in farms. The looped wire is taken and, using a metal rod connected to a power drill in a timber frame jig, wound into a tight coil. This coil is then removed from the metal rod and hand cut into small rings. These are riveted together one-by-one in the Japanese '12-in-2' pattern, which consists of 2 central rings with 12 perpendicular rings connected around. This process is painstakingly repeated to create the rug“. Find this approach for a rug design as interesting as we do?
